Family Services - Crisis Management
Crisis Management:
- The #1 rule when
in doubt as to whether it is a crisis is..get help. It is better to
err on the side of caution.
- Dangerous, threatening,
violent, self harming, destructive or suicidal behaviour (should be
a link here to some suicide warning sign resources or list them here)
- Strange, unusual
behaviours or thinking, and symptoms that are new or have increased
in severity.
- Conditions that
when failing to take medication may be causing significant physical,
mental or emotional harm.
What to do in a
crisis:
If your ill relative has a pre-written crisis plan, follow it. If not:
- Ensure the safety
of everyone in the house
- Call 911
- Take them to the
hospital ER
- If requesting police
services, ask for a HELP team member
- Contact their PACT
or CMHA worker if they have one
- Try to remain calm
and allow the ill person the space he/she needs
- Explain your concerns,
observations, and experiences to the police or ambulance staff when
they arrive
- Look after yourself
by using stress management techniques and seeking help if necessary.
Chatham Kent Family Network is there to help family members by calling
during the day at 436-6100 x 222.
