About Us - Caring for those who care for the mentally ill

Supporting those whose lives are affected by mental illness through their journey of hope and recovery.

The Chatham-Kent Consumer & Family Network is a non-profit organization run by and for consumers, family members and friends who care about a person with a serious mental illness. Chatham-Kent Consumer & Family Network will assist to reduce the stress of consumers, family members and friends through support, education, advocacy and networking.

In October 2006 The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care began funding the “Consumer” component of the Family Network. We incorporated shortly thereafter and became The Chatham Kent Consumer and Family Network.

The CKCFN receives a majourity of its funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Division. For purposes of the Social Contract legislation, our organization has been placed in the "Mental Health Act" sector.

The CKCFN augments our funds through grants, fundraisers and donations

The Chatham Kent Consumer and Family Network follow a Hope and Recovery model. Our board of directors, executive director, staff, volunteers and members believe that all things are possible.

    Goals
  • To provide support to consumers and family members
  • To provide education to the community at large and to the consumer and family
  • To facilitate awareness regarding mental illness and its implications
  • To advocate for people with mental illness, their families and caregivers
  • To determine the organization's role in long-term care and support services
  • To provide meaningful activities for consumers

We offer daily peer support, leisure, recreation and learning opportunities to all persons living with a mental illness 16 years of age or older. As of September 5th 2007 we support 150 individuals.

You Deserve Support
You will receive education to stop the stigma and dispel the myths surrounding mental illness and its impact on the family. You and your family will receive peer support from others who understand the stress of living with someone with a serious mental illness. We will advocate for you and your family on both individual and organizational related issues. We co-operate and network with existing relevant family groups and mental health organizations.

You Deserve Answers
You can express your feelings about being a family member or a friend of someone with a mental illness and have an opportunity to talk with others in the same situation. The support groups offer you a combination of peer support and education.
